Beating an opponent in chess requires a combination of strategic understanding, tactical skill, and sometimes a bit of psychological insight. Here are some general tips that can help you improve your chances of winning:

1. **Understand Basic Principles**:
- **Control the Center**: Controlling the center of the board (e4, d4, e5, d5 squares) is crucial as it allows your pieces greater mobility and influence over the board.
- **Develop Your Pieces**: Develop your knights and bishops early. Try to move each piece once before moving a piece twice, and avoid unnecessary pawn moves.
- **King Safety**: Castling is a key move for protecting your king and also connecting your rooks.

2. **Tactical Awareness**:
- Be aware of basic tactical motifs like forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, and double checks.
- Always check if your last move or your opponent's last move has left something undefended or has set up a potential tactic.

3. **Plan Your Moves**:
- Have a plan. Even a bad plan is better than no plan. Your plan should be based on the specific characteristics of the position.
- Adapt your plan based on your opponent's moves.

4. **Manage Your Time**:
- Use your time wisely. Don't rush, but also don't spend too much time on one move.

5. **Endgame Knowledge**:
- Learn basic endgames. Knowing how to checkmate with a king and queen against a king, or understanding pawn endgames can turn a drawn game into a win.

6. **Learn From Mistakes**:
- After each game, especially losses, analyze your game to understand what went wrong and what you could have done better.

7. **Psychological Aspect**:
- Stay calm and focused. Don’t get too confident when winning or too disheartened when losing.
- Try to read your opponent's playing style and adapt accordingly.

8. **Practice**:
- Regular practice, including playing games, solving chess puzzles, and studying grandmaster games, will significantly improve your skills.

Remember, chess is a game of infinite complexity, and even grandmasters are constantly learning and adapting. Enjoy the process of learning and improving!

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) recognizes the academic achievement of college students and provides opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders. Our college chapter, Beta Phi Gamma, is five start chapter. As a team we work to bring resources and build research skills with fellow students through research projects. The United Men Of Color program, ‘UMOC’, was founded to help underrepresented men overcome the inequalities that lead to poor academic performance, and are associated with weak enrollment, retention, and graduation from higher education institutions. In addition, the UMOC program exists to provide a space where underserved and underrepresented men can feel empowered to find their individual voices as they navigate the college environment. UMOC also aims to develop a long lasting bond between scholars, program coordinators, and external program partners.

The United Men of Color (UMOC) program at Stella and Charles Guttman Community College is designed to provide an inclusive and supportive space where men of color, in particular, can receive academic support, mentoring, and have the opportunity to engage in social-cultural dialogue that will enhance their understanding of self and their relationship to different communities. At UMOC, our scholars participate in a variety of activities that include but are not limited to monthly workshops, community service projects, and program initiatives designed to build character and a sense of community amongst participants. UMOC is part of the larger CUNY Black Male Initiative umbrella.
